La Buona Ventura.

Dipinto su tela, 1000x800 mm. con cornice 1230x980mm. La tela presenta antichi restauri e tracce di sporco diffuse. Cornice coeva in legno argentato a mecca, è ornata da due ordini di intaglio, con battuta a motivo floreale e profilo perlinato. Qualche mancanza e rottura. 

La scena rappresentata, con quattro personaggi, si richiama al soggetto della “Buona ventura”, con la zingara chiromante che legge la mano al cavaliere mentre questi viene borseggiato da un complice alle sue spalle. Tale soggetto fu diffuso con diverse varianti dai pittori caravaggeschi, particolarmente da pittori francesi seguaci di Caravaggio a Roma. L’autore sembra rifarsi alla maniera di Valentin de Bologne, Si veda, per un confronto, l’opera con soggetto simile, del 1628, ora presso il Musée du Louvre, Paris, intitolata “The Fortune Teller”. 

Condition Report

Oil on canvas, 1000x800 mm with frame 1230x980 mm. The painting shows ancient restorations and spread traced of dirty. Contemporary frame in mecca silvered wood, adorned by two carving orders with floreal motifs and matchboarding profile. Some loss and breaks.

The scene represented, with four characters, refers to the subject of the "Good luck", with the gypsy fortune teller who reads the knight's hand while he is pickpocketed by an accomplice behind him. This subject was spread with various variations by Caravaggio painters, particularly by French painters who followed Caravaggio in Rome. The author seems to refer to the manner of Valentin de Bologne. See, for a comparison, the work with a similar subject, from 1628, now at the Musée du Louvre, Paris, entitled "The Fortune Teller".
