Tiratura del XVIII secolo. L’incisione ad opera dell’anonimo incisore tedesco noto come Meister E.S. (Maestro E.S.) raffigura il momento in cui, il giorno della nascita di Cristo, la Sibilla si trovava in una stanza, sola con l’imperatore Augusto. Improvvisamente un cerchio d’oro apparve attorno al sole e in questo cerchio una vergine bellissima con un fanciullo in grembo. La Sibilla mostrò questo portento all’imperatore: mentre costui teneva gli occhi fissi alla visione sentì una voce che diceva: “Questa è l’ara del cielo!”. Esclamò allora la Sibilla: “Questo fanciullo è più grande di te; adoralo.” L’episodio viene narrato nella Legenda Aurea di Jacopo da Varazze.

Issue of the XVIII century. The engraving by the anonymous German engraver known as Meister E.S. (Maestro E.S.) depicts the moment when, on the day of Christ's birth, the Sibyl was in a room, alone with the emperor Augustus. Suddenly a golden circle appeared around the sun and in this circle a beautiful virgin with a child in her womb. The Sibyl showed this portent to the emperor: while he kept his eyes fixed on the vision he heard a voice saying: "This is the altar of heaven!". Then the Sibyl exclaimed: “This child is greater than you; adore it. " The episode is narrated in the Golden Legend by Jacopo da Varazze.
