4to; 215x150 mm. Legatura in piena pergamena con unghie. Titolo manoscritto al dorso. Taglio inferiore manoscritto. Pp. [40], 344 [i.e. 346], [2]. Marca tipografia al frontespizio. Carattere greco e romano; ripetute nella numerazione le p. 319-320; iniziali e fregi xilografici ornati. Leggera macchia d’umidità al margine superiore di alcune carte. Buon esemplare marginoso.

Prima edizione italiana. L’opera è un trattato militare scritto da o per l'imperatore bizantino Leone VI il Saggio (al potere dall'895 al 908) e successivamente curato da suo figlio, Costantino VII Porfirogenito. Rifacendosi ai contenuti di autori precedenti come Eliano Tattico, Onasandro e lo Strategikon dell'imperatore Maurizio (VI secolo), l’opera è una delle maggiori opere relative tattica militare bizantina. 
L'opera riguarda la formazione, lo schieramento e l'addestramento della fanteria e della cavalleria, lo schieramento in battaglia e la logistica, le tecniche d'assedio e l’analisi di guerre navali.
L’opera è arricchita dalle importanti note di Filippo Pigafetta, viaggiatore, militare, letterato e cittadino della Repubblica di Venezia, fratello di quell'Antonio che fu compagno di viaggio di Magellano e celebre narratore dei suoi viaggi.

4to; 215x150 mm. Full vellum binding with squares. Handwritten title on the spine. Manuscript lower edges. Pp. [40], 344 [i.e. 346], [2]. Printer's device on the title page. Greek and Roman types; repeated in the numbering the p. 319-320; ornate woodcut initials and ornaments. Light damp stain on the upper margin of some leaves. Good copy, margins.

First Italian edition. The work is a military treatise written by or for the Byzantine emperor Leo VI the Wise (in power from 895 to 908) and subsequently edited by his son, Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus. Drawing on the contents of previous authors such as Aelian Tacticus, Onasander and the Strategikon of Emperor Maurice (6th century), the work is one of the major works on Byzantine military tactics.
The work concerns the formation, deployment and training of infantry and cavalry, battle deployment and logistics, siege techniques and analysis of naval warfare.
The work is enriched by the important notes of Filippo Pigafetta, traveller, soldier, man of letters and citizen of the Republic of Venice, brother of Antonio who was Magellan's traveling companion and famous narrator of his travels.
