2 parti in un volume in folio in 305x222 mm. Legatura in mezza pergamena con angoli. Taglio superiore e inferiore manoscritti. Cc. 72 nn.; cc. [14], CCXIX. Frontespizi stampati in rosso e nero entro belle bordure xilografiche con scene di storia romana e ritratti di antichi filosofi e letterati in cornice. Marca tipografica ai frontespizi e all’ultima carta. 37 graziose illustrazioni nel testo e numerosissime iniziali ornate incise in xil. Note manoscritte ai margini di alcune carte. Nota manoscritta al primo foglio. Alcuni fori di tarlo al margine di alcune carte. Bell’esemplare.

Bellissimo esemplare del ‘500 di questa vastissima opera scritta da Plinio il Vecchio in 37 libri e poi pubblicata postuma dal nipote Plinio il Giovane. Tratta di mineralogia, geografia, astronomia, antropologia, zoologia, botanica, medicina vegetale ed animale. Č una vera enciclopedia che il giovane Plinio defině “opera amplissima ed erudita, e varia quanto la natura”. Particolare importanza per la storia dell’arte antica sono i libri dal XXXIII al XXXVII incentrati sulla mineralogia e la lavorazione dei metalli e delle pietre.

2 parts in one folio volume. 305x222 mm. Half vellum binding with corners. Upper and lower handwritten edges. Leaves 72 not numbered; Leaves [14], CCXIX. Title pages printed in red and black within beautiful woodcut frames with scenes from Roman history and framed portraits of ancient philosophers and person of letters. Printer's mark on the title pages and on the last page. 37 beautiful illustrations in the text and numerous woodcut initials. Handwritten notes on the margins of some leaves. Handwritten note on the first leaf. Some worm holes in the margin of some leaves. Good specimen.

Beautiful 16th century specimen of this vast work written by Plinius the Elder in 37 books and then published posthumously by his nephew Plinius the Younger. It deals with mineralogy, geography, astronomy, anthropology, zoology, botany, plant and animal medicine. It is a true encyclopedia that the young Plinius defined as a "very extensive and erudite work, and as varied as nature". Of particular importance for the history of ancient art are books XXXIII to XXXVII which focus on mineralogy and the working of metals and stones.
