Bella e rara edizione figurata veneziana del primo libro interamente dedicato alla ginnastica. Le splendide tavole, tratte da disegni di Pirro Ligorio, raffigurano il pugilato, il gioco della palla, le lotte, esercizi di destrezza con funi e pertiche, il sollevamento di pesi, ecc. 
ll De arte gymnastica è l’opera più nota e originale del Mercuriale, professore di medicina a Bologna e a Pisa e il maggior studioso di questa materia nel suo tempo, frutto di quasi sette anni di studi e di ricerche nei musei e nelle biblioteche di Roma. L’opera è il primo trattato completo di ginnastica medica, nel quale la ginnastica degli antichi è collegata con quella moderna, di cui il Mercuriale è il vero precursore. La ginnastica è esaminata dal punto di vista sia storico, sia medico propriamente detto, sia più generalmente igienico. Sono rievocati gli esercizi di agilità, di forza e di destrezza in uso presso gli antichi greci e romani; sono presentati i vari esercizi ginnici e il modo di eseguirli, affinché possano riuscire di utilità per la salute; sono discussi gli effetti che essi producono, sia sull’individuo sano sia su quello malato. Mercuriale avvalora la ginnastica quale mezzo terapeutico; tratta anche di balneoterapia e di idrologia medica.

Beautiful and rare Venetian illustrated edition of the first book entirely dedicated to gymnastics. The beautiful plates, taken from Pirro Ligorio’s drawings, depict boxing, ball games, fights, dexterity exercises with ropes and poles, lifting weights, etc.
The De arte gymnastica is the best known and most original work by Mercuriale, a professor of medicine in Bologna and Pisa and the greatest scholar of this subject in his time, the result of almost seven years of study and research in the museums and libraries of Rome. The work is the first complete treatise on medical gymnastics, in which the gymnastics of the ancients is connected with the modern one, of which the Mercurial is the true precursor. Gymnastics is examined from both a historical, medical and more generally hygienic point of view. The agility, strength and dexterity exercises used by the ancient Greeks and Romans are recalled; the various gymnastic exercises and the way to perform them are presented, so that they can be useful for health; the effects they produce are discussed, both on the healthy individual and on the sick one. Mercuriale supports gymnastics as a therapeutic means; he also deals with balneotherapy and medical hydrology.
