2 parti in un volume in 8vo. 122x74 mm. Legatura coeva alle armi in vitello rosso su cartoncino, piatti con cornice a doppio filetto che racchiude un elaborato disegno di filetti ricurvi e ornamenti, tondi, mezzelune, stelle, aquile, dorso a quattro scomparti con fasce in rilievo, motivi geometrici di fregi floreali e fogliame, tagli sfaccettati con motivi floreali colorati su fondo dorato. Al centro del piatto anteriore lo stemma attorniato dal nome del proprietario “IO. BAP CRESCEN”; sul piatto posteriore altro stemma attorniato dal nome di altro proprietario “TORQUAT CUPIUS”. Al contropiatto firma di antico possessore “Cte Alphonse de La Guère”. Pagine 340, [12], Segn.: a-y8. Bianche le ultime 3; 631, incluso Frontespizio, 1 bianca, [40], 2 bianche. Marca sui Frontespizi, Iniziali ornate, fregi silografici. Bell’esemplare.

Bella edizione curata da Paolo Manuzio. Opera in magnifica legatura coeva alle Armi. Questo importante trattato, il più antico libro di retorica sopravvissuto, anticamente era attribuito a Cicerone, poi a Quinto Cornificius, ma entrambe le attribuzioni sono ora considerate spurie e la paternità rimane sconosciuta. Si tratta comunque di un fondamentale testo di riferimento sulla struttura e gli usi della retorica. La seconda parte comincia con proprio Frontespizio “Rhetoricorum Posterior”. Esemplare di prestigiosa provenienza, appartenuto a: 
Giovanni Battista Crescenzi, 1577-1635, pittore e architetto del primo periodo barocco; 
Torquatus De Cupis, o de Cuppis, 1577-1637, nobile romano e gesuita che insegnò al Collegio Romano;
Conte Alphonse Pantin De La Guère, 1846-1899, archeologo.
Si registrano altre legature sia con lo stemma di de Cupis che con quello di Crescenzi.

Condition Report

Two parts in a volume in 8vo. 122x74 mm. Contemporary red calf binding with coat of arms, covers with double rules frame that inglobe an elaborate drawing of curved rules and ornaments, rounds, crescents, stars, eagles, back with four sections with embossed bands, geometric motifs of floral ornaments and foliage, edges with colored floral motifs on a gilt background. On the anterior cover the coat of arms surrounded by the name of the owner “IO. BAP CRESCEN”; on the posterior cover another coat of arms surrounded by the name of another owner: “TORQUAT CUPIUS”. On the inside cover, the signature of the former owner "Cte Alphonse de La Guère". Pages 340, [12, Blank last 3 pages]; 631, including Titlepage, 1 blank, [40], 2 blank. Printer’s device on titlepages, woodcut adorned initials and ornaments. Good copy.

Beautiful edition edited by Paolo Manuzio. Work in magnificent contemporary armorial binding. This important treatise, the oldest surviving book of rhetoric, was formerly attributed to Cicero, then to Quinto Cornificius, but both attributions are now considered spurious and authorship remains unknown. 
However, it is a fundamental reference text on the structure and uses of rhetoric. The second part begins with its own title page “Rhetoricorum Posterior”.
Copy of prestigious provenance, which belonged to: 
Giovanni Battista Crescenzi, 1577-1635, painter and architect of the early Baroque period; 
Torquatus De Cupis, or de Cuppis, 1577-1637, Roman nobleman and Jesuit who taught at the Roman College. 
Count Alphonse Pantin De La Guère, 1846-1899, archaeologist.
There are other bindings both with the de Cupis coat of arms and with that of Crescenzi.
