4to piccolo. 192 x 137 mm. Legatura in pergamena avorio di riutilizzo moderno. Carte 18. Segn.: A-D4 E². Note tipografiche al Colophon in fine: “Venetiis, Apud Cominum de / Tridino Montisferrati. / 1546” . Carattere italico e romano. Marca tipografica al Frontespizio con motto ‘Experientia auctoris exploratio et argumentum’. Iniziali figurate e quattro grandi illustrazioni impresse in xilografia nel testo. Buon esemplare. 

Rarissima prima edizione. Importantissimo trattato sulla navigazione, uno dei più rari che parla dell’America. Capitoli su: pericolosità dei venti, venti cardinali, i nomi dei venti, le tempeste, l'influenza dei corpi celesti, le dimensioni della Terra. Il capitolo 23 presenta una nuova bussola, raffigurata nell’illustrazione a carta 15. Wheeler: “Very rare … The writer gives on fol. 14 ch. xxiii a careful description of the compass including theory and rules for use. The compass is called on fol. 15 pixis or buxulos, cf. the French boussole”. Il Capitolo 25, “De navigatione oceani ad novum orbem”, è dedicato all’America. Libri: “Uno dei libri più rari che riguarda l’America”.

Small 4to. 192 x 137 mm. Modern reuse ivory parchment binding. Leaves 18. Collation: A-D4 E². Typographical notes at the Colophon at the end: “Venetiis, Apud Cominum de / Tridino Montisferrati. / 1546” Italic and Roman Type. Printer’s device on the title page with motto 'Experientia auctoris exploratio et argumentum'. Illustrated Initials and four large woodcut illustrations in the text. Good specimen.

Very rare first edition. Very important treatise on navigation, one of the rarest that talks about America. Chapters on: danger of winds, cardinal winds, the names of winds, storms, the influence of celestial bodies, the size of the Earth. Chapter 23 features a new compass, depicted in the illustration on leaf 15. Wheeler: “Very rare … The writer gives on fol. 14 ch. xxiii a careful description of the compass including theory and rules for use. The compass is called on fol. 15 pixis or buxulos, cf. the French bossole”. Chapter 25, “De navigatione oceani ad novum orbem”, is dedicated to America.
