Persia. Two rare portraits of Persian Ambassadors.
 
Due rari ritratti, fine XVII e inizio XVIII secolo.

- LARMESSIN, Nicolas de. Schach-Abas, Grand Sophy de Perse.
Paris, P. Bertrand, 1680 ca.
Incisione su rame. 240x170 mm. Margini. Ottimo stato di conservazione.
Ritratto in ovale. Sotto uno stemma e la legenda “Fils de Schach Sefi, Grand Sophy de Perse, Auquel Il a succède en L’année 1642, Estant pour lors âgé de 13 ans”. Al piede “A Paris chez P. Bertrand … Avec Privil. du Roy”. 

Incisione su rame. 300x205 mm. Piccoli margini. Rinforzo sul margine superiore. 

Rarissima stampa. Bel ritratto dell’ambasciatore persiano che fuma il narghilé. Sotto l’immagine una legenda con notizie sull’ambasciata del dignitario persiano in Francia: “fils son entrée à Paris le 7 Février 1715, en l'audience du Roy”.  .

Mehmet Riza Beg fu inviato dallo Scià di Persia Hussein I nel 1714 in Francia per rappresentarlo presso il re Luigi XIV, in particolare durante la firma del Trattato di commercio e di amicizia tra la Francia e Persia. Arrivò a Parigi il 7 febbraio 1715 e fu ricevuto da Louis XIV à Versailles il 19 febbraio. Ripartì per tornare in Persia il 12 Settembre 1715. Durante la sua permanenza, il suo stile di vita fu oggetto di viva curiosità da parte dei parigini. Nacque grazie a lui la moda di farsi il bagno.

Portrait in oval. Below, a coat of arms and the legend "Fils de Schach Sefi, Grand Sophy de Perse, Auquel Il a succède en L’année 1642, Estant pour lors âgé de 13 ans". At the foot “A Paris chez P. Bertrand… Avec Privil. du Roy".

Very rare print. Beautiful portrait of the Persian ambassador who smokes a hookah. Below the image, a caption with information on the Persian dignitary's embassy in France: "fils son entrée à Paris le 7 Février 1715, en l'audience du Roy". .
Mehmet Riza Beg was sent by the Shah of Persia Hussein I in 1714 to France to represent him before King Louis XIV, particularly during the signing of the Treaty of Commerce and Friendship between France and Persia. He arrived in Paris on February 7, 1715 and was received by Louis XIV in Versailles on February 19. He left to return to Persia on 12 September 1715. During his stay, his lifestyle was the subject of keen curiosity on the part of Parisians. Thanks to him, the fashion for bathing was born.
