Quattro volumi di 225x160 mm. Alcune brossure originali illustrate preservate ma con evidenti difetti e mancanze. Ca. 2400 pp. complessive. Con incisioni nel testo e 102 tavole f.t. in nero ed a colori. Pagine slegate e difetti interni ed esterni. Esemplare non sofisticato.

Opera interessante, stilata dal teologo e giurista italiano che sorprendentemente guarda all'Inquisizione con sguardo assai critico, come uno dei più atroci e disumani strumenti della storia dell'uomo.
Scritta tra il 1817 e il 1818 per reazione al perdurare dell'Inquisizione in Spagna ad opera di Ferdinando VII, l'opera fu tuttavia pubblicata solo postuma nel 1862 e subito inserita nell'Indice dei libri proibiti, in cui rimase fino al Concilio Vaticano II.
La trattazione spazia dall'indagine su inquisitori e inquisiti più celebri fino alla ricostruzione di processi celebrati a carico di personaggi minori, allo scopo di approfondire e analizzare le regole della macchina giudiziaria dell'Inquisizione, l'elenco dei reati su cui l'istituzione aveva competenza, le procedure istruttorie con le raffinate tecniche di interrogatorio, nonché le svariate forme e livelli di tortura cui potevano essere sottoposti gli accusati, fino all'ampio assortimento delle possibili pene.

Four volumes measuring 225x160 mm. Some original illustrated publisher's paperbacks preserved but with evident defect and lackings. Approx. 2400 pp. in total. With engravings in the text and 102 o.t. plates in black and colour. Unbound pages and internal and external defects. Unsophisticated specimen.

Interesting work by the Italian theologian and jurist who surprisingly takes a very critical look at the Inquisition as one of the most heinous and inhuman instruments in human history.
Written between 1817 and 1818 as a reaction to the persistence of the Inquisition in Spain by Ferdinand VII, the work was however only published posthumously in 1862 and immediately placed on the Index of Forbidden Books, where it remained until the Second Vatican Council.
The treatise ranges from the investigation of the most famous inquisitors and inquisites to the reconstruction of trials of lesser figures, with the aim of delving into and analysing the rules of the Inquisition's judicial machine, the list of offences over which the institution had jurisdiction, the preliminary investigation procedures with the refined interrogation techniques, as well as the various forms and levels of torture to which the accused could be subjected, up to the wide assortment of possible punishments.
