In 4to. Legatura moderna in piena pergamena. Carte 48 non numerate, con 26 righe. Segn.: a-f8. Titolo a carta a1r “Pomponij Melle cosmographi de situ orbis liber primus …”; Colophon a carta f8v “Impressum est hoc opusculum Venetijs per Franciscum renner de Hailbrun, 1478”. Carattere romano, Iniziali xilografate, titoli e sottotitoli stampati in rosso e nero. Timbro annullato della Biblioteca Reale Bavarese, Monaco di Baviera. Bell’esemplare.

Rara edizione veneziana. Opera stampata a lettere tonde, ornata con quattro titoli e sottotitoli in rosso e quattro grandi iniziali impresse in xilografia. La Cosmographia di Mela, in tre libri, è la prima opera latina sopravvissuta sulla geografia e l'unico trattato dedicato esclusivamente a quell'argomento in latino classico: offre il quadro più completo dello stato della geografia nel I secolo dopo Cristo e descrive l'intero mondo conosciuto all’epoca. . Questo lavoro esercitò una notevole influenza sugli autori successivi, in parte attraverso le ampie citazioni nella Historia naturalis di Plinio dove Mela è citata come un'importante autorità. Le pubblicazioni di Mela e Claudio Tolomeo furono incentivi per ulteriori esplorazioni, e in particolare le descrizioni dell'Africa di Mela furono usate dai navigatori portoghesi che si avventuravano per la prima volta nell'Atlantico. Leaf A1r, title "Pomponij Melle Cosmogrami de situ orbis Liber primus..."; Colophon on leaf F8v: “Impressum est hoc opusculum Venetijs for Franciscum Renner de Hailbrun, 1478". Italic type, woodcut initials, title and undertitles printed in red and black. Canceled stamp of the Bavarian Royal Library, Munich. Fine copy.

Rare Venetian edition. Work printed in round letters, adorned with four titles and undertitles in red and four large woodcut initials. The Mela’s Cosmography, in three books, is the first Latin work that survived the geography and the only treatise dedicated exclusively to that topic in classical Latin: it offers the most complete summary of the state of geography in the first century after Christ and describes the whole world known at the time. This work exercised a considerable influence on subsequent authors, in part through the large quotes in the Historia Naturalis of Pliny where Mela is cited as an important authority. The publications of Mela and Ptolemy were incentives for further explorations, and in particular the descriptions of Africa were used by the Portuguese navigators who ventured for the first time in the Atlantic.
