Vista meravigliosamente dettagliata del Forte Oranje olandese sull'isola di Itamaraca in Brasile. Itamaraca fu una delle prime zone del Brasile ad essere colonizzata dai portoghesi e produsse alcune delle più ricche piantagioni di zucchero nello stato di Pernambuco. Come Olinda, fu catturata dagli olandesi, che costruirono un imponente forte per salvaguardare i suoi possedimenti contro futuri attacchi. Legenda in basso a sinistra”. Very nice and detailed view of Dutch fortification known as Fort Oranje on Itamaraca island. Itamaraca was one of the first parts of Brazil to be settled by the Portuguese, and produced some the richest sugar plantations in the state a Pernambuco. Like Olinda, it was captured by the Dutch, who built an impressive fort as a safeguard against future attack. In the late 1630s, Holland attempted to reassert its claim over Brazil by establishing a series of forts along the coastline. Legend on the left bottom. Map take from the work: “De nieuwe en onbekende weereld” (Dutch) or “The New and Unknown World” (English). The work was published in Amsterdam in 1671 by Jacon Meurs.
