Two engraved illustrated title pages, one in French and one in Italian, an engraved notice to the reader, 20 pages with text in Italian and French on two columns within a woodcut frame, 9 full-page copper-engraved plates outside the text, numbered I-IX. A total of 12 copper-engraved plates. Sporadic marginal tears, good copy.
First edition. Illustrated work on the perspective of the famous French architect, which uses the notable engravings of P. J. Gaultier, active in those years in Italy. Cicognara: “Pietro Iacopo Gaultier intagliatore con grande apparato diede al pubblico quest’opera di poche pagine con 9 tavole in rame, nelle quali sono trattati alcuni punti che riguardano la pratica del basso rilievo.”
Born in Lyon in 1727, Petitot studied architecture with Soufflot. After winning the first grand prize of the Paris Academy of Architecture in 1745, he stayed in Rome where he was in particular a companion of Piranesi, before settling in Parma with Duke Filippo, son-in-law of Louis XV and patron of Bodoni.
