In-4to. Legatura coeva in vitello marmorizzato, fregi e titolo in oro sul dorso, risguardi marmorizzati. Pagine VIII, 36, [2]. Frontespizio inciso su doppia pagina, 91 mappe incise, con coloritura out-line coeva. Difetti alla legatura, piccola macchia sulle mappe 40 e 49, bell’esemplare. 

Rara prima edizione di questo splendido atlante, in coloritura coeva. L’Atlas contiene: il Frontespizio inciso su doppia pagina, 3 tavole che raffigurano la ‘Sfera’, 1 tavola finale con le bandiere delle diverse nazioni, 87 mappe incise a doppia pagina con globo celeste, mappa del mondo, i quattro continenti, Americhe, Europa, Africa, Asia. Di notevole rilievo la mappa del Nord America, L'Amerique Septentrionale, che mostra una cartografia teorica molto interessante riguardante un passaggio a nord-ovest. La caratteristica più importante è un fiume a Ovest, che collega il lago Superiore con il lago dei boschi e il lago Winnipeg e poi scorre fuori dalla mappa presumibilmente verso il Pacifico. Si collega anche attraverso un sistema di corsi d'acqua e laghi alla baia di Hudson. 
Quando Georges Louis Lerouge, ingegnere-geografo del re Luigi XV, decise di compilare questo atlante e di compilare un breve riassunto di questa scienza, il suo scopo non era quello di proporre un trattato geografico pieno di "descrizioni e cataloghi", ma soprattutto di riunire "mappe più precise di quelle apparse finora".

In-4to. Contemporary marbled calf binding, gilt ornaments and title on the spine, marbled endpapers. Pages VIII, 36, [2]. Engraved double-page title page, 91 engraved maps, with contemporary out-line coloring. Binding defects, small stain on maps 40 and 49, good copy.

Rare first edition of this splendid atlas, with contemporary coloring. The Atlas contains: the engraved double-page title page, 3 plates depicting the ‘Sphere’, 1 final plate with the flags of the various nations, 87 engraved double-page maps with Celestial globe, World map, the four Continents, Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia. Of notable importance is the map of North America, L'Amerique Septentrionale, which shows a very interesting theoretical cartography regarding a Northwest Passage. The most notable feature is a river to the west, which connects Lake Superior with Lake of the Woods and Lake Winnipeg and then flows off the map presumably to the Pacific. It also links through a system of streams and lakes to Hudson Bay. When Georges Louis Lerouge, engineer-geographer of King Louis XV, decided to compile this atlas and to compile a brief summary of this science, his aim was not to propose a geographical treatise full of "descriptions and catalogues", but above all to bring together "more precise maps than those which had appeared up to now".
