4to. 209 x 140mm. Legatura coeva in pergamena, antiche annotazioni numeriche ai piatti, tagli rossi a spruzzo, sguardie posteriori. Carte [8], 168. Marche di Navò sul Frontespizio e in fine. Al Frontespizio data 1558; In fine “In Vinegia Per Comin da Trino di Monferrato M D LIX”. Frontespizio entro elaborata cornice xilografica, Testatine e Iniziali xilografiche, 84 illustrazioni xilografiche nel testo. Ex libris araldico incollato al contropiatto. Antica iscrizioni in inchiostro seppia al verso dell’ultima carta, non leggibile. Bell’esemplare. 

Rara terza edizione. Opera riccamente figurata che illustra la tecnologia pratica del XVI secolo. Suddivisa in dieci libri è la prima e più celebre sulla metallurgia e mineralogia, con riferimenti anche all'alchimia.  Mieli: “Il trattato di Biringuccio si può qualificare come la prima opera organica relativa a tutto un gruppo di scienze applicate che sia stata pubblicata nel Rinascimento.” Hoover Coll. 129-30: "one of the classics in the history of science and technology". Duveen: “famous book on metallurgy and mining, containing interesting chapters on alchemy and illustrated by very fine woodcuts”. Norman: “The first comprehensive treatise on the pyrotechnic arts. … Virtually all of Biringuccio's descriptions are original, based upon first-hand information garnered during his various employments as a mine and forge operator, director of the Sienese mint, cannon caster and fortification builder, director of building construction at the Duomo, and head of the papal foundry and munitions works… Biringuccio's work is important to art history for its description of the Renaissance methods of casting medallions, statues and bells; and to the history of printing for containing the earliest known account of typecasting. His contributions to chemistry include the first account of silver amalgamation and liquation, the earliest mention of cobalt blue and manganese, and the first description of antimony, antedating that of Basil Valentine by fifty years.”

4to. 209 x 140mm. Contemporary vellum binding, old numerical annotations on the covers, red sprayed edges, later endpapers. Leaves [8], 168. Navò's device on the title page and at the end. On the title page the date is 1558; at the end "In Vinegia Per Comin da Trino di Monferrato M D LIX". Title page within an elaborate woodcut frame, woodcut Headings and Initials, 84 woodcut illustrations in the text. Heraldic ex libris, pasted to the back cover. Ancient inscriptions in sepia ink on the verso of the last leaf, not legible. Good copy.

Rare third edition, the best one due to the large format. Richly illustrated work illustrating the practical technology of the 16th century. Divided into ten books, it is the first and most famous on metallurgy and mineralogy, with references also to alchemy.
