Bulino, 310x228 mm. Margini. Nell’iscrizione del margine inferiore: “Ill.mo et R.mo D.Dno Henrico Caetano S.R.E. Card. ampl.mo Bon.ae Legato/ Exiguum hoc munus imaginis Titiani pict. cuius nomen orbis continere non valet submisse dicat sacratque/ humill.s dedit. s.q. servuus August. Carratius. 1587”. Ottimo stato di conservazione.

Questa stampa è forse la più famosa di Agostino Carracci in tiratura del’700 e mostra l'alto grado di perfezione tecnica raggiunto dopo il viaggio a Venezia. Contrariamente a quanto credeva Gori Gandellini, ovvero che essa derivasse da un disegno in proprio dell'artista, essa riproduce un autoritratto del Tiziano conservato a allo Staatliche Museen di Berlino L'incisione e il dipinto ritraggono Tiziano alla stessa età, ma nelle due opere egli è abbigliato in maniera diversa. La data di realizzazione dell'incisione, 1587, si colloca temporalmente in un momento di grande svolta nell'arte incisoria di Agostino, sia dal punto di vista dell'invenzione, che da quello tecnico. L'artista raggiunge in questi anni la piena maturità nell'uso del bulino, caratterizzato da un tratteggio spazioso e ampio che si allarga maggiormente al centro di ciascun segno, in maniera tale tradurre graficamente il luminismo e colorismo della pittura veneta e riprodurre qualsiasi tipo di materiale: dalla pelliccia ai broccati ai differenti incarnati.

Ampl.mo Bon.ae Legato / Exiguum hoc munus imaginis Titiani pict. cuius nomen orbis continere non valet submisse dicat sacratque / humill.s dedit. s.q. servuus August. Carratius. 1587 ". Good conditions.

This print is perhaps the most famous by Agostino Carracci in the 18th century issue and shows the high degree of technical perfection achieved after the trip to Venice. Contrary to what Gori Gandellini believed, or that it derives from a drawing of the artist himself, it reproduces a self-portrait of Titian preserved in the Staatliche Museen in Berlin The engraving and the painting portray Titian at the same age, but in the two works he he is dressed differently. The date of the engraving, 1587, is temporally placed in a moment of great turning point in the engraving art of Augustine, both from the point of view of the invention and from the technical one. In these years the artist reaches full maturity in the use of the burin, characterized by a spacious and wide hatch that widens more in the center of each sign, in such a way to graphically translate the luminism and colorism of Venetian painting and reproduce any type of material: from fur to brocades to different skin tones.
