Bifolio in 8vo piccolo, 174x110 mm. Testo in francese su due pagine, scrittura in corsivo a penna, inchiostro bruno. In alto la data “En mer le 1er octobre 1883?; in fine la firma. Buona conservazione. 

Lettera scritta dall’esploratore mentre era in missione nel Tonchino, a bordo di una cannoniera francese. Nel dicembre 1882 Neis era stato incaricato dal ministero dell’istruzione pubblica di svolgere una missione di esplorazione nella regione tra l’Alto Laos e il Tonchino. L’esplorazione, per terra e per mare, si concluderà nell’aprile 1884. 
In questa lettera auspica che la sua missione contribuisca alla pacificazione della regione, ove era in corso una rivolta contro i francesi invasori : «j’espère n’être qu’au début de ma carrière et des services que je puis rendre à notre pays dans cette belle Indo-Chine que j’aime tant […] La mission dont je suis membre contribuera je le crois à la fois à la pacification du pays et à l’affermissement de notre domination sur ces riches contrées» [Spero di essere solo all'inizio della mia carriera e dei servizi che posso rendere al nostro paese in questa bella Indocina che amo così tanto […] La missione di cui faccio parte contribuirà, credo, sia alla pacificazione del paese sia al rafforzamento del nostro dominio su questi ricchi paesi].

Bifolio in small 8vo, 174x110 mm. Text in French on two pages, cursive handwriting in pen and brown ink. At the top the date “En mer le 1er octobre 1883?; at the end the signature. Good condition.

Letter written by the explorer while he was on a mission in Tonkin, aboard a French gunboat. In December 1882 Neis had been commissioned by the ministry of public education to carry out a mission of exploration in the region between Upper Laos and Tonkin. The exploration, by land and by sea, will end in April 1884.
In this letter he hopes that his mission will contribute to the pacification of the region, where a revolt against the French invaders was underway: «j'espère n'être qu'au début de ma carrière et des services que je puis rendre à notre pays dans cette belle Indo-Chine que j'aime tant […] La mission dont je suis membre contribuera je le crois à la fois à la pacification du pays et à l'affirmissement de notre domination sur ces riches contrées» [I hope to be alone all beginning of my career and the services I can render to our country in this beautiful Indochina that I love so much […] The mission of which I am a part will contribute, I believe, both to the pacification of the country and to the strengthening of our dominion over these rich countries ].
