Suite of 12 copperplate engravings depicting the twelve months of the year through the agricultural activities related to each.
In oblong 8vo; mm 105x140; newly executed carboard binding covered with beautiful eighteenth-century damask paper; engravings (mm 68x7) are numbered 1-12, bear the name of the month at the top of the figure, and are accompanied by a commentary tercet. The language denotes some Venetian dialectal influence. The paper, which is very thick, although it has no watermark, can certainly be traced to the early 17th century for its clean mixture. Very good condition and excellent impression of the plates.
APPARENTLY UNKNOWN anonymous series of popular prints, which, like all publications of this kind (calendars, lunars, ephemerides, etc.), due to their practical purpose and low commercial value have been systematically lost over the centuries and are therefore of great rarity The figures in this suite refer to the usual figurative canons related to the representation of the months, which have long since been codified, but owe their interest above all to the rarity of this kind of printed publication. The volume edited by A. Rigoli and A. Amitrano Savarese, concerning profane folk prints from the Achille Bertarelli collection, one of the largest in Italy (Fuoco, acqua, cielo, terra. Stampe popolari profane della Civica Raccolta Achille Bertarelli, Vigevano, 1995), although it includes a section (p. 251 ff.) devoted to the theme of the cycle of the months, reports nothing comparable to the present series.
