Rare first edition that collects Petrioli's works in two volumes. The beautiful anatomical plates present in the works come from original drawings by the eminent anatomist Bartolomeo Eustachio, completed in 1552. The drawings were found in the Vatican Library and were published in 1714 by Clement XI's doctor Giovanni Maria Lancisi, who skilfully managed to complete the work of Eustace. Petrioli, 1720-1760, surgeon to the king of Sardinia, received permission from Cardinal Carafa to study and republish them.
The “Riflessioni Anatomiche” was first issued without the plates, which were added in 1741. The work, in fact, although dated 1740 on the title page, presents the date 1741 both on the title vignette and on some plates. The text seems originally to have ended at p. 78; there is also an apparent break at p. 32. The first section ends at p. 98; a separate, probably later, section begins on p. 99 and its paging sequence continues that of the first section.
