GOLTZIUS. Ovid's Metamorphoses. Complete set.

GOLTZIUS, Hendrik. Ovid's Metamorphoses.
Amsterdam, Claes Jansz Visscher, 1589-1615

Foglio oblungo. 258x310 mm. Legatura moderna in mezza pergamena e cartonato, angoli. 52 incisioni all’acquaforte numerate.

British Museum: “These plates were originally published in three sets (of respectively twenty, twenty and twelve plates), each separately numbered and later numbered consecutively (which explains the double numbering on the plates). The first two sets (i.e. forty plates) were designed by Goltzius around 1589 and the third set around 1615. The plates were engraved in the workshop of Goltzius, possibly by Jacob Matham, Jan Saenredam, Jan Muller, Jacob de Gheyn II and Pieter de Jode.”

Condition Report

Oblong Folio. 258x310 mm. Quarter modern binding in vellum and cardboard, corners. 52 numbered etchings. Plates of 177x250 mm., glued on album cardboard. Under the illustration explanatory verses in Latin by Franco Estius in the first 40 illustration and by G. Rijkius in the last twelve. Very nice condition.

Very rare complete series with illustrations from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The engravings, taken from original drawings by Goltzius, are the work of several artists from his workshop. The first engraving, depicting Chaos, bears the date 1589 and Goltzius's signature; his monogram in interlaced letters is in the lower part of the last plates, from 41; the date 1615 is printed on this plate. Visscher's address appears in plates 1 and 21.
