In addition to the President of the Session, De la Porte, the famous Victor Schoelcher was also present, at the time the leading French specialist in colonial issues, best known for his leading role in the abolition of slavery in France in 1848. Amédée de La Porte, 1848 – 1900, was a member of parliament in five legislatures, from October 1877 to June 1900.
